Made to order only - because an album should be specific to the people or the occasion or the contents, even if this means the book is not made until after the event once the contents are known.

If you anticipate needing an album, do visit By Hand Books to discuss with Ros and see for yourself the variety of binding styles/materials which can be employed, bearing in mind the functional requirement to accommodate and protect photographs or other inserts, and perhaps to allow for the addition of further pages at a later date.  

Wood - Second row

Wood is one of the many less obvious materials, natural and synthetic, allowing the creative bookbinder to offer a variety of bindings which may have roots in the past as well as a contemporary - even futuristic - feel to them. 

See at By Hand Books examples of Coptic-style bindings (and the hardwood boards from which they can be commissioned)to appreciate their practicality (opening completely flat) and durability (quartersawing of boards avoids warping).

Altered Books - last four rows

More 'book arts' than 'practical bookbinding', Altered Books may nevertheless require bookbinding skills to give them effect. 

Those who fear that to alter a book must be to vandalise or disrespect the original, rather than to give it a new direction or interpretation, are urged to see current examples by Ros Long, at By Hand Books and/or the temporary exhibitions including her work (see News and Events).
